Let us imagine that a time machine transports John from the first century to the upper level of Crossgates Mall on Black Friday. He arrives with his perennial Advent "sound bite" - Repent for the kingdom of God is at hand! We are also introduced to the principal character of the Advent season - John the Baptist. We find ourselves once again in the period of expectation and waiting that we call Advent. These words, taken from the Advent Carol of Hope, echo the fact that the year is winding down and we certainly are experiencing (at least where I live) the earth growing colder. That growth can flower from our grieving, that we can catch our breath Yet I believe beyond believing that life can spring from death The chill sets in a little colder, the verities we knew seem shaken and untrue. This show is curated and installed by the MFA students under the guidance of, and with the assistance of, the Museum’s curatorial staff. The Missouri State University MFA Showcase exhibition provides an opportunity for the Museum to show more local art, while extending the recognition of incredible student talent in our region by expanding exposure to the work being produced in educational settings across our community. Over the last several years, this showcase developed as a way to fill a month-long gap in the Museum’s exhibition calendar that normally exists between two of its most well-attended exhibits, the annual All School Exhibition and Watercolor USA. As a result, they are included in this year’s exhibiting group. This exhibit had to be cancelled in 2020 due the COVID-19 pandemic, when Polallis and Djordjevic were originally scheduled to present their work. These MFA candidates will be showing work in a variety of media. Miller, Casaundra Beard, Neal Polallis, and Vladan Djordjevic. This year’s exhibition presents works by Jennifer Rose Wolken, Tristan B. This year marks the fourth year of this collaboration between Missouri State University and the Springfield Art Museum. This special exhibition, produced in collaboration with the Missouri State University Art + Design department, features five bodies of thesis works by Master of Fine Arts candidates in the MFA Visual Studies program at Missouri State University.
